So Fox News headlines today shout ‘War On Cops’! So much for taking it easy on the aggressive rhetoric, right! So there were 11 cops shot in the last 24 hours. But this isn’t really actually much different to how many were killed last January. It is just being sensationalized along with the the recent shootings in Tuscan for political purposes.

Though you have to love one police official’s comment ‘this really makes no sense’. I guess he has never been falsely arrested, had his life destroyed by being accused of something he didn’t do or been robbed by cops at gun point. He was obviously also not one of the over 700 people convicted in just one area of California last year in which it was found the DAs office falsified information or withheld evidence that could have cleared them. That’s only the ones we know about, and of course nothing was said to those responsible expect for in 1% of those cases. If so he would know why if any such ‘war’ ever existed.

No I am not inciting violence of any kind. But people can only take so much. Now of course they will probably only suffer more a s the cops will be out there in even more aggressive fashion. Perhaps if Internal Affairs were doing their jobs and the legal system worked so complaints could really be pursued against law enforcement officers who faked evidence and blatantly abused their jobs we would see less of these incidents. Clearly blasting a few cops is going to do nothing except get you killed. Maybe someone needs to come up with a new organization to go after corrupt cops in a legal way and put them behind bars for years where they can suffer the same fates they have condemned so many others to unjustly. That is far worse a punishment. Food for thought….

Miami International Airport

This is a monster sized airport. However for being so large and up to date it is void of Internet service! There is supposedly a paid WIFI service but I get a warning from my computer’s security every time I have thought about getting on. In emergency the hotel in the airport offers Internet on the 7th floor but it is 25 cents for a few minutes! Chairs all have arm rests to there is no where to lay down if you get stuck here and it gets really cold!

Caracas, Venezuela

For those of you landing in Venezuela for the first time you do need to be careful here, there have been plenty of tourists that have been robbed or taken advantage of at the airport. Do not flash around your dollars or Euros and avoid the guys walking around wispering that they will change your money like the plague. To get into the city do not take any taxi’s except the black SUVs with the yellow stickers that are right outside the front doors. This will run about $25 into the city at the legal exchange rate. Those on a budget will find buses by walking a few steps to the national terminal which runs closer to $5 per person. The trip from the airport into Caracas is one of the most dangerous parts of your journey here with many robberies when traffic is backed up or by rocks being dropped onto cars that are going under the tunnels. You will notice the taxi drivers even take off their signs to do this leg. However good news is there is an Internet cafe.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad

This tiny airport is a common lay over for those traveling through the Caribbean. It is small and nothing is open at night so if you smoke make sure you bring a lighter and cigarettes. Also make sure you have small bills to change of get stuck with a lot of  TT Dollars. This airport seems very safe and thankfully there is free WIFI! However there is only one electric plug for those needing to charge their laptops (about half way down the check in line) so grab the seat and guard it well. If you get bumped from your flight – which isn’t uncommon with Caribbean Airlines make sure you demand to be put up at the Hyatt. This is a truly spectacular hotel right on the water where you can dine in comfort next to the sparkling ocean or take a water taxi or tour.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida International Airport

Surprisingly Fort Lauderdale airport is more comfortable and better equipped than its Miami counterpart to the South. If you get stuck in South Florida it is better to be here. There is free WIFI and plenty of plugs to keep your laptop charged. It doesn’t even get that cold and the chairs allow for you to lay out. The only downside is that if you want to get out taxis can be very expensive. It is at least 2 miles to get anywhere out of the airport. Instead you can take the free shuttle to the Tri-Rail train or check the travel websites for last minute car rental deals. Dollar Rent-a-Car is one of the best for those trying to get a car at the last minute, they take debit cards and won’t make you jump through hoops.

The Red Carpet in on State Rd. 84 is one of those you must avoid. This is also a warning for those booking cheap hotel deals through Hotwire.com. Hotwire doesn’t give out the name of the hotel and while they often have cheap deals you will often find you get what you pay for. Their 2 star rating claims to offer hotels like the La Quinta which is not bad at all. However a recent booking landed me with the Red Carpet Inn, where I received anything but red carpet service.

For a start I called before heading to the hotel to make sure that they had WIFI. They said the did and again when I checked in. Though the group of others complaining at the front desk should have been a giveaway. The room didn’t look to bad but there were cockroaches and I could not connect to the Internet. Finally at 10pm the front desk clerk admitted that their Internet service had been out for 2 days and there was no telling when it would be back on. Needless to say I lost a full day of work which is much more valuable than what I saved by staying there.

Things happen in every business. Bugs are a major pest in Florida wherever you are. However deliberately lying about having Internet is something completely different. I tried talking to the manager (calmly) who refused to even come out of his office and had to talk to him by phone from the front desk. I wanted to give him the opportunity to make it right. I know things happen out of a manager’s control but lying to get my money is a different story. He was uninterested in making any effort to save their reputation at all.

So here this post is DO NOT stay at the Red Carpet Inn in Fort Lauderdale, FL and if your travel website gives you this hotel demand a refund! They were warned. Fortunately I do have an army of extremely affordable assistants at my disposal who I can use to slam this hotel and warn as many travelers as possible. So if I stay in your hotel, don’t lie to me!

Fort Lauderdale

Travel Lodge Suites

The Travel Lodge Suites is a nice all suite hotel located by the lake. Nothing really special but you do get a small kitchen and living area as well as flat screen TVs and good WIFI. Downside is that is is miles out of town so unless that is what you are really looking for or you are a fisherman than may not be your first choice. Definitely not worth $80 a night though if you can get a sweet deal through a travel website for $30-40 it is a deal. I managed to pay $16 so I was more than pleased. There is also a bowling alley next door for entertainment. Only complaint is they also don’t leave soap or similar items in the rooms!

Best Western

The Best Western, is absolutely the nicest hotel I have stayed in in Okeechobee to date. No chance of an early check-in though! The manager told me someone had stolen some pillows, but when I got to my room I understood why and wished I had some extra room in my suitcase to pack a few in myself. Great looking room, pool, well furnished, good WIFI. This was one of the most comfortable stays I have had in a while! Definitely worth the money.

Traveller’s Inn

This must be the lowest priced Inn in Okeechobee and you certainly get what you pay for in terms of the room. It is barren, the bathroom doors don’t close and the fridge didn’t work, but it has WIFI and with a super low weekly rate you can’t beat it if you need a longer stay without killing your wallet. Like more of Florida Okeechobee is very seasonal and rates are higher in the winter.

Budget Inn

The Budget Inn is my absolute favorite. Mostly thanks to the manager Chris. He is a great guy and while he may not actually save me money he is always so friendly that you feel he is giving you the most awesome deal in the world. This is the most central place to stay and most everything is within walking distance. WIFI is good except for one room. Breakfast is OK, but if you ask nicely you may just get a couple bottles of Bud thrown in at check-in.

Dangerous Idea No.1

Get rid of travel restrictions and enable people to travel freely and live wherever they please, whenever they want!

No this is not just an idea for avoiding having to pay for visa’s. But really why shouldn’t we be able to travel to any country we want whenever  and decide to live wherever we want?

Yes there are obvious financial benefits for those of us who like to travel and yes I can understand the need for country’s to need to try and control their citizens in order to make money from them and control the status quo. But really wouldn’t it be better for everyone on the face of the planet?

I am sure many of you are already thinking that your neighborhood will be overrun by poor unsavory characters from some remote part of the world or that terorists will invade and take over. Though after the dust settles from an initial shift in residence won’t we all be better off? The European Union is already doing it. With an EU passport you can travel, live and work anywhere in Europe you please. Has this resulted in the Germans invading their neighbors or economies being crushed, no. If America was no longer the big bad enemy that barred so many foreigners, a truly open border would probably mean a huge influx from the Middle East, but then it would be their country too and there would be no need for them to bomb us as a whole.

Yes, there will be a big influx of people from poor nations at the beginning seeking the American Dream. But then many Americans will be moving overseas to places they love more. The global economy will do better from free trade and quality of living will rise. People can live where they want, if they don’t like the laws and rules they can go somewhere they do. If they want to live under Islamic law, let them head east and do it. If Californians want to smoke pot then let them move somewhere in South America where it is legal. Let people pay taxes where they live, not just as a birth right. This will make governments become more responsible with spending and have to keep more sensible budgets in order to balance lower taxes and offering the amenities and safety people desire.

Of course there may be issues, but overall this could be exactly what the world needs to solve many issues with poverty and incarceration for immigration and other silly offenses and a world of happy people will be a safer world where everyone lives better.

The IMF says problems will continue for the US, Ireland and Spain as well as has predicted problems for Canada, Scandinavia and the Asia specific region!

So what’s left? Personally I am not sure about the Canada part. There are still many individuals with large amounts of liquid capital that they are looking to invest and according to industry pros house prices and financing are still a lot better than in the US. The housing market in Venezuela and Margarita Island is still incredibly strong. India’s future is predicted to be bright for the near future (10 years), however they could easily slip off track and you need plenty of cash to grease the right palms if you want to succeed. Germany has seen the highest growth in the EU and other parts of Europe are offering better financing deals than the US, though scams are still an issue.

Now is an excellent time to buy if you have cash. There are investment opportunities all around if you are smart about it. However you need to have the stomach for some risk. If you can buy and hold till 2020 you should come out a big winner!
